You will definitely pay more for a hotel dtownown, and one of the hidden costs is that they charge you for parking at the hotel, which can sometimes be more expensive than parking in a lot somewhere.I assume because you will have a car, you are actually driving to Montreal. Otherwise it would be silly to rent a car at the airport and then leave it at the hotel parking lot! The airport area will be cheaper ($70-90) compared with most dtownown hotels($110-150) and the parking will be free there. But the airport really has no subway nearby. You have two options, which are bus or train to dtownown.If you choose bus, there are two types. The first is the standard city bus. It's under $3.00 per ride, but you have to figure out what buses to take that will get you dtownown or to a subway so you can get to where you want to be. There is also the express airport bus (# 747) that takes you from the airport to dtownown. That one costs $8.00 per ride.The train is about $6.00 per ride, but it only comes about once every hour during non-peak times. It goes to Central Station dtownown.And public transit is a bit tricky because the subway and some bus lines do not run after about 1AM and before 6AM. So if you were out clubbing and need to get back after the bar closes at 3AM, a taxi ride will run you over $40 to get to the airport area from dtownown.You may want to consider one of these places:Hotel Villa ($69)One block from the Saint-Laurent subway stop, it is in the dtownown area and not far from everything. At that price, you can afford to park your car in some lot and still be saving money. Just make sure you book a room with private bathroom. Rooms with shared bathroom are even cheaper, but some people are not comfortable with that. This place may be a bit noisy, so if you are a light sleeper, go somewhere else.Auberge-Manoir Ville Marie ($89)This hotel is located in Old Montreal and I believe actually comes with free parking. Again, watch out because some rooms offered must use a shared bathroom. The Champ-de-Mars subway stop is not far away, and you are walking distance from dtownown and the Old Port.Please note that I have not tried these places myself, so cannot tell you much about the service and cleanliness of the places. But I know the areas and both are safe touristy areas. If I was coming in from out of town and did not know the area, I'd probably try the Auberge if price was one of my most important issues. Otherwise, I'd focus on staying at a chain like Best Western Hotel Europa on Drummond Street. I've been in there and it is clean, has a great breakfast place right downstairs, big public parking lot across the street, and in the heart of dtownown. You can usually get something for $125-135 there and you can complain to Best Western head office if you were not happy with your stay. They may worry a bit more about their brand name.
